Pipes are extremely vital when building structures. Structures could mean houses, buildings, and schools. Pipes are used in the distribution of water but in some pipes, gasoline or oil, depending on its main purpose. Not all pipes are made with the same materials. They are made differently from each other as they have different purposes. During the 19th and 20th century when pipes were first invented, lead was used mostly to make pipes because of its malleability and durability. However, it has been noted that lead-related health problems like infant mortality had occurred during its introduction to the market, which then lead to the introduction of galvanized steel and copper. This made copper pipes the predominant material selected for domestic water service and distribution in residential construction. Recently galvanized pipes and plastics have been introduced as alternatives.

History of Galvanized Pipes

Wheatland Tube Company first manufactured galvanized pipes in 1986 and was the first company to be certified as ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for its hot dip galvanized pipe. Galvanization is the process of coating a metal with zinc, which means that galvanized pipes are more improved than old steel and iron pipes. It is coated with zinc in order to protect it from the elements. Galvanized pipes are used mainly to transport low pressure liquid such as water, thus used when making domestic constructions. The life span of these pipes is usually 40 to 50 years old before it corrodes. However, galvanized pipes bring unhealthy effects once they start to corrode. Not only that water flow will be blocked when deposits build up inside the pipe but it also mixes with the tap water which potentially brings bacteria and waste, which could lead to different types of diseases. One of the most noticeable signs of galvanized pipe corrosion is bad, metallic taste of tap water, caused by the mixture of lead and zinc in it brought by the corrosion. Poor water flow due to the build up of deposits is also one symptom. When not noticed earlier, water discoloration to brown, red or yellow will also be perceptible. Another reason of pipe malfunctions is its low value upon purchase. Manufacturers may have to act on this and even buyers to avoid buying low quality materials next time. So better check those galvanized pipes that you have now.

Where you can find them

When looking for those perfect galvanized pipe filings, try checking out at homefixitpart.com. They have wide array of pipe filings available. Even those filings that are hard to find are available in the site. Tradekey.com also has a lot of filings to choose from coming from thousands of manufacturers globally. However, prices of the latter’s products may be a bit higher compared to the former.  Make sure to check your galvanized pipe dimensions before purchasing however.

To check if you have galvanized pipes, a galvanized pipe is smooth and shiny with a bright gray color. However, if you cannot identify your pipe or that if it looks bad in general, it is then time to call an expert in pipes for inspection. When planning to buy pipes, conduct research first, as to which type of pipe is more lasting and more durable. When in doubt, call a plumber to decide which pipe is best for the structure. Furthermore always bear in mind that a copper pipe can never be attached to a galvanized pipe since the two can cause a chemical reaction, which may in turn, result to pipe degradation, and worse, cause health related problems. Always remember that it is better to use just one type of pipe in the entire household. Furthermore when selling a property, make sure that there are no leaking or corroding galvanized pipes because these can incur problems with the buyer in the future. If there is, better to replace those pipes as soon as possible. The same reminder is also for the buyer to always check pipes when buying a property. When thinking of replacing old galvanized pipes, there is a process referred to as repiping, this involves replacement of all pipes and connectors in a home or in a building. It is tedious and quite costly. However there are companies that are experts on this process and can offer relatively friendly costs.
